Just like some of my coworkers, I love Christmas. Not just Christmas itself, but everything about it. The lights, the baking, the shopping, the family time, watching little children see Santa, and on and on.
We will start with the baking. I love to bake. I find it relaxing, and rewarding. What is better than the smell and taste of something hot out of the oven? Like Judy, I normally bake a lot of different cookies and treats this time of year, and share them. This year is going to be different. In the first time of my entire adult working life I have to work during the holidays. I am not complaining, it will just be different. I do have two adult children that can bake if they feel that they cannot live without a certain cookie or treat. Again like Judy, I have cookies that I make because my mom did, like Spritz, and cookies I make because my family likes them, like chocolate and white chocolate biscotti. When the girls were little I made several different kinds of roll out cookies so they could help decorate them. They have grown out of that and so have I. This year whatever I have time for will get baked, and next year I will know to start earlier.
I do not even know where to start with shopping. I love to shop, but mainly I love to get a really good deal. Christmas shopping is the best, as the stores have great sales. When my kids were little and would have specific things that they wanted, I was one of those crazy people out in the middle of the night on black Friday. That too has changed, for several reasons, but the main reason being that my children have grown up. Now they just email me links to what they want, I order them, and they try to pretend that they are surprised on Christmas morning. I try to come up with a few things they are not expecting, just to mix it up a bit. No one in my family really needs anything at all, so every year I suggest that instead of presents, we should just go to Hawaii for Christmas. Maybe next year…….
The best part of Christmas is little kids. I love little kids anyway, and the fact that they get so excited about Christmas is adorable. My extended family gets together on Christmas Eve, and my nieces have children, so we are back in the little kid excitement phase again. It is so cute to watch them pass out the presents, and then help everyone open them. For one of my little great nieces it is all about the opening. She could care less about what is inside the package, she just wants to open it. I am pretty sure you could wrap empty boxes, and she would be just as excited. The youngest great niece is just the opposite. She has to be encouraged to open the presents, and then wants to play with each one as she opens them. This is adorable, and is how my oldest daughter was, and still is. Since I have always purchased way too many presents for my girls, gift opening takes a long time at my house.
I could go on and on. I love the holiday season, except for the stress. Next year I will be better prepared, or in Hawaii. Either way, it will still be great.
